Line that applies the opaque blackout coating to curtain fabric as a stable foam with a knife, built from an unwinder, a J-box, a padder, a weft straightener, a COALIS coating machine, stenter drying, a calender and finishing units.

Blackout curtain fabric keeps the light out through the opaque coating layer applied to its back. Full blackout comes from a multi-layer structure: the opaque recipe is usually applied in three passes and blocks up to 100% of the light, bringing insulation and privacy with it. Blackout fabric is used wherever light has to be fully controlled, from home and hotel-room curtains to roller blinds, meeting rooms and auditoriums; in public spaces, curtains are usually expected to be flame retardant as well.

Opaque coating passes cut the light step by step
Light cut-off by the opaque coating Three opaque coating passes are applied to the fabric cross-section in turn; the light coming through from the source behind falls with each pass and is cut completely after the last one. Light cut-off in blackout fabric comes from the coating passes: the opaque recipe is usually applied in three passes, with the number of passes and the coat weight set to your product.

Blackout coating is one of the main applications of stable (non-collapsing) foam coating. The coating compound is foamed in a foam generator by mixing it with compressed air; the foam is fed across the full width into the trough on the knife's entry side, and the knife spreads it onto the fabric at an even thickness. Compared with paste coating, foam works with less coating material, carries less water into the fabric so it dries with less energy, and gives the fabric a softer, more flexible handle. Acrylic-based compounds are common in curtain coatings. The line's units are numbered on the example layout drawing below.

How is blackout fabric produced?

Blackout is produced with a multilayer coating structure built on a base fabric: it blocks up to 100% of light and provides high insulation and privacy. The infographic sets that structure alongside the polymer options and production technology of tarpaulin coating.

CEMAY infographic showing tarpaulin coating types and the multilayer blackout construction: PVC, LDPE/HDPE and acrylic/silicone coatings, precision knife-over-roll coating, tension and drying control, 3400 mm working width.

  1. Choice of coating polymer PVC gives 5+ years of high durability, LDPE/HDPE waterproofing, acrylic/silicone high UV resistance and elasticity.
  2. Precision knife-over-roll coating Ensures even fabric thickness, high dimensional stability and uniform coating distribution.
  3. Multilayer blackout construction The layers block up to 100% of light and provide insulation and privacy.
  4. Tension and drying control Keeps the coating stable, prevents wrinkles and maintains dimensional stability.

With CEMAY lines, wide production up to 3.4 metres is possible at high quality.
