Coating line that gives workwear, bag, umbrella and military clothing fabrics waterproofing, flame retardancy and abrasion resistance.

The outdoor technical textile coating line applies protective coating to fabrics used in the open air and in harsh conditions — workwear, bags, umbrellas and military clothing. Each product asks something different of the coating: hydrostatic head on a backpack, water repellency on military clothing, flame retardancy and chemical resistance on workwear, a light, waterproof surface on an umbrella.

The drawing on this page is an example layout of a textile coating line with a single coating unit; the line runs left to right. The fabric roll is opened in the fabric guiding and centring unit, and the fabric is centred on the line axis so that it reaches the coating unit evenly. The coating is applied knife-on-cylinder on the COALIS coating machine. The fabric then enters the five-chamber, infrared-heated drying and fixing oven; the exhaust hoods at the oven's entry and exit draw off the vapour released in drying. At the oven exit the calender evens the coated surface between its rolls, the cooling cylinders cool the fabric before winding, and the fabric is wound into large batches at the batcher. The units on the line are designed specifically to the customer's and the process's requirements: a light umbrella fabric and a multi-layer, laminated protective garment fabric call for different unit arrangements, and drying length and working width are set to your product as well.

The fabric travels left to right: it is unwound and centred on the line axis in the fabric guiding and centring unit, coated knife-on-cylinder on the COALIS coating machine and dried in the five-chamber infrared drying and fixing oven; it passes the calender and the cooling cylinders and is wound at the batcher. How are umbrella and sunshade fabrics coated?

Coating an umbrella or sunshade fabric means transferring a protective chemical evenly onto a high-performance filament fabric, then crosslinking the polymers in a dryer unit so the fabric gains durable water repellency. The process has two halves: raw materials and components first, then coating and fixation.

  1. High-performance fibre selection Nylon 6,6 and PET filaments provide high tenacity, tear resistance and dimensional stability.
  2. Protective chemical formulation Fluorocarbon or silicone-based polymers improve water and dirt repellency; special additives provide flame retardancy.
  3. Air knife application Chemicals are applied by the air knife method, with a top squeegee roller, for a uniform coating across the surface.
  4. Drying and crosslinking Polymers are crosslinked in the dryer unit and bonded to the fabric with heat, which makes the water repellency durable.

After processing, the fabric provides UV protection, resistance to harsh weather conditions and long-lasting water and dirt repellency.
