Denim Finishing Technology: Functional Transformation in Three Steps

Denim Finishing Technology: Functional Transformation in Three Steps

Denim finishing is the even transfer of a viscosity-adjusted polymer onto the denim surface, cured in a high-temperature oven so the fabric becomes water-repellent and more resistant to wear. The process runs in three steps, and each step's output is the next one's input.

Why is denim finishing applied?

To expand the area of use. The coating gives denim products three things: it makes them water-repellent, more resistant to wear, and it improves their appearance. Together those three take denim out of being an everyday fabric and make it a technical material.

Step one: how is the fabric prepared and the chemical selected?

The denim surface is cleaned first. Then the chemical is prepared — in polymer or paste form, with its viscosity adjusted. Viscosity here is not a preference but a value the application method imposes: it decides how the chemical will be transferred in the next step.

Step two: how is the coating material applied to denim?

By two methods: blade (rake) or roller template. Both have the same aim — applying the coating material evenly to the denim surface. The blade meters the chemical off through a fixed gap; the roller template passes it through a perforated cylinder onto the fabric. Which one is chosen follows the viscosity set in the previous step.

Step three: why is curing done in high-temperature ovens?

Because before it cures, the polymer is only a layer sitting on the surface. Cured in high-temperature ovens, the coating remains permanently bonded to the fabric. However well the first two steps are done, an incomplete cure leaves the coating impermanent.

What comes out at the end of the three steps?

StepWhat is doneOutput
1. Fabric preparation and chemical selectionSurface cleaned, viscosity adjustedA surface and a chemical ready for application
2. Precise applicationBlade (rake) or roller templateAn even coating layer
3. Curing and fixingCured in a high-temperature ovenA permanent bond to the fabric

What the three steps produce is high-performance technical denim: durable against chemicals, breathable and suited to harsh weather conditions.

You can look through our line for denim and general fabric coating on the Fabric / Denim Coating page. The unit that performs the application is on the fabric coating machine page and the one that performs the cure on the Drying System (RAM / Stenter) page. Frequently Asked Questions

Why is denim finishing applied?

To make denim products water-repellent, more resistant to wear and better looking. Together those three expand the area of use of the product.

How is the coating material applied in denim finishing?

By blade (rake) or roller template methods. In both the aim is to apply the coating material evenly to the denim surface; which one is used follows the adjusted viscosity of the chemical.

How is the denim coating made permanent?

Through the curing and fixing step: the polymer is cured in high-temperature ovens so the coating remains permanently bonded to the fabric. Without it the coating is only a layer sitting on the surface.
